Highways

North Carolina has the largest state-maintained highway system in the nation, with 78,000 miles of highways. Two interstate highways intersect in Johnston County, giving the area excellent access to many East Coast destinations. North-south Interstate 95 and east-west U.S. 70 intersect in the Smithfield-Selma area. East-west Interstate 40 crosses I-95 about 8 miles south near Benson. The area is also served by U.S. 301, U.S. 701, N.C. 39, N.C. 96 and N.C. 210.
