Johnston County Public Schools
Widely-renowned throughout North Carolina for its innovation in testing and accountability, the Johnston County School System is the only public school district in Johnston County. A seven-member Board of Education sets policy and determines educational philosophy. The superintendent of schools serves as the chief administrative officer.
Currently there are 40 public schools in Johnston County. The system is the fastest growing in the state and serves about 31,000 students. With a budget exceeding $200 million, the district employs over 3,500 teachers and staff and is the county’s single largest employer. The racial composition of students in the schools is 65 percent white and 35 percent minority. Student achievement in the Johnston County schools ranks in the top ten percent of North Carolina school districts.
The school system offers traditional courses of study and also has programs for students with special needs, including academically and intellectually gifted programs, middle college high school, early college and programs for the mentally and physically handicapped.
