Scout Camps

Johnston County is fortunate to host two scout camps within its borders: Camp Mary Atkinson for girl scouts and Camp Tuscarora for boy scouts:

Camp Mary Atkinson

Located in northwestern Johnston County, Camp Mary Atkinson consists of 262 wooded acres of land. Camp facilities include hiking trails, a swimming pool, a lake, and a challenge-by-choice climbing tower. Tents, cabins, and sports fields round out this well-utilized property’s amenities. Camp Mary Atkinson hosts resident camp during the summer months and Troop camping during the school year.

Camp Tuscarora

Camp Tuscarora is located on a wooded reservation in southeastern Johnston County near Bentonville.  Much of the camp was renovated in 1994 and the camp trading post was remodeled and enlarged this year to include an area with tables and chairs where Scouts can sit to read their merit badge pamphlets and sip a slushy in air-conditioned comfort. The Pathfinder program, designed for first-year Scouts, offers training in fundamental Scouting skills.

A full aquatics program is conducted on Lake Sylvania, the camp's private, 20-acre lake, and nearly 40 merit badges in the areas of field sports, Scoutcraft, ecology/conservation, health, life sciences and campcraft are offered during the day. In the evenings, there are campfires, waterfront games, a beach party, scavenger hunt and sports challenges.
