Parks & Recreation

Mission Statement:  The Town of Selma Parks and Recreation Department recognizes that recreation is valuable part of life and it seeks to promote enjoyable, constructive leisure and recreational activities that will meet the needs of the surrounding community it serves.  The commitment to health education, entertainment, and high morality will be emphasized through all activities and programs conducted or sponsored by the Recreation Department.  The Recreation Department will strive to maintain activities that are beneficial to current population needs and create programs that are considered appropriate to the changing needs of the area in and around Selma.

Presently, the Recreation Department sponsors a wide range of senior, adult & youth athletic programs throughout the year.  Our Youth Athletic Programs offer football, cheerleading, fall and spring soccer, fall and spring baseball, fall and spring fast-pitch softball, basketball, summer basketball, and T-Ball, and machine-pitch and tennis.  Adult Programs include basketball and tennis.  Our Senior Programs include monthly Sharpe Street Senior Center Activities, Johnston County Senior Games, Bingo, North Carolina State Fair Trip, and bi-monthly day trips.

The Recreation Department hosts several tournaments and Athletic Special Events each year, including the  United States Junior Olympic Skills Competition.

In addition to its athletic programs, the Recreation Department offers a variety of recreation programs and camps & clinics.  General Recreation Programs include baton, winter walking, karate, art classes.  Some of the Camps & Clinics include Volleyball Camp, Basketball Camp,  Challenger Soccer Camp, and Baseball and Softball Clinics.

The Recreation Department also organizes several Festivals & Special Events throughout the year.  The largest of these events is the Selma Railroad Days Festival that is held during the first weekend of October.  The Railroad Days Festival features live entertainment, food vendors, arts and crafts vendors, special events, a children's area, carnival, the Selma Railroad Run, parade, pageant, and much more.  In addition to the Railroad Days festival, the Town of Selma and the Recreation Department have recently developed two other festivals.  These events are the Selma Car Classic and All-American Festival.  The Selma Car Classic is held the third Saturday in April and the All-American Festival is held on the 4th of July.  Other special events include the Easter Egg Hunt, Green Drink Day, Trick or Treat Day, Calls from Santa, Santa at the Depot, and Senior Citizens Day, to name a few.

Recreation Facilities operated by the department include several neighborhood parks, tennis courts, gymnasium, outdoor basketball courts, picnic shelters, and baseball and softball fields.  Many of the recreation facilities are available to rent for birthday parties, company picnics, family reunions, and many other functions.

The Recreation Advisory Committee is appointed by the Selma Town Council to advise on the development and operation of the Town's Parks and Recreation Department.  The committee meets the 3rd Monday of each month at 6:00 pm at the Richardson House located at 305 N. Pollock Street.  Applications to serve on the committee are available at Selma Town Hall or by clicking here for a printable version.  For more information on serving, please call 975-1411.  In order to serve on the board you must reside within the Selma town limits.
