If you are new to Johnston County, you must register in the county in order to vote in all local, state and national elections. Also, if you're new to North Carolina, you must establish official residency by means of a North Carolina Driver's License and vehicle registration.
You have 30 days after establishing residency to get your North Carolina Driver's License. You need to apply in person at the nearest driver's license office. If you already have a license from another state, you will be required to take a written road sign recognition and vision tests. A road test may be required. The state of North Carolina requires proof of automobile insurance carrying the minimum requirements of liability insurance for a private passenger vehicle which is is $30,000 for bodily injury for one person; $60,000 bodily injury for two or more people and $25,000 property damage. North Carolina law requires each company to notify the DMV when coverage has been canceled.
Voting Voter registration may be completed at the Johnston County Board of Elections, located at the courthouse in Smithfield, or at any public library. The Board of Election is open Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Registration closes one month before an election.
