Being the tenth largest state in the union, North Carolina is represented in Congress by two U.S. Senators and 13 Congressmen in the House of Representatives. After the 2000 Census, North Carolina received a 13th seat in the House. The Smithfield-Selma area is located in North Carolina's Second Congressional District.

From the friendly small town rural communities to the city life of the State Capital, the Second Congressional District of North Carolina has something to offer everyone. The district boasts rapidly expanding industrial and technological centers; a booming agricultural economy; and some of North Carolina's most prestigious institutions of higher learning. All of Johnston County is located in the second district along with part or all of Chatham, Cumberland, Franklin, Harnett, Lee, Nash, Sampson, Vance and Wake Counties.
