Research Triangle Park is the largest planned research park in the United States. It has a stellar reputation of being a fertile ground for start-ups, high-tech companies and international research facilities. Companies in the Park are clustered in several industry sectors, including biotechnology and life sciences, information/communications technology, and environmental sciences. In addition, a number of US federal agencies have a presence in the Park.

Its close ties to three major universities, Duke, UNC and NC State, allow for extensive technology and research access. Consisting of more than 160 companies and nearly 45,000 knowledge workers, the park’s most notable tenants include IBM, Cisco Systems, Sony Ericsson, US Environmental Protection Agency, GlaxoSmithKline, Biogen IDEC and Nortel.

RTP is located along Interstate 40 in Wake and Durham counties, less than 30 miles from the Smithfield-Selma area.
