20 students graduate from Junior Leadership JohnstonJuly 14, 2016Twenty Johnston County high school students recently completed Junior Leadership Johnston County 2016.
Sponsored by Duke Energy, Junior Leadership Johnston helps youth in their efforts to prepare for leadership positions in business, community, education and government affairs.
The program, hosted by Johnston Community College, is open to rising high school juniors. It lasts one week and gives students the opportunity to visit and hear from leaders in business and industry, health services, nonprofits, local tourist attractions and county government, including law enforcement. Students apply for the program in February of their sophomore year. Through a selection process, students from each school are invited to take part. The Smithfield-Selma Chamber assists in organizing the course.
Highlights of the this year’s program included tours of Novo Nordisk, Sysco, the Ava Gardner Museum, the Johnston County Heritage Center, Johnston UNC Healthcare and the Johnston County Sheriff’s Office. Also, students attended a business-etiquette luncheon sponsored by Clayton Women in Networking, and they met with Johnston County’s superintendent of schools and his cabinet members.Students portrayed county commissioners and county agency representatives in a mock zoning case.
The week-long program ended with an evening banquet where the students made presentations based upon the week’s activities.
