• Deadline for Innovative High School Applications Approaching

    Students interested in attending one of the Johnston County Public Schools Innovative High School programs should apply now.

     

    The district offers several high school options for students other than the traditional high school setting. These high schools/programs include smaller class sizes and support for students who are interested in pursuing specific careers or desire more rigorous curriculum/college level classes.

     

    Several of these opportunities are in collaboration with Johnston Community College, one involves a partnership with the University of Mount Olive, and the newest program, JoCo Teach, is a partnership with Johnston Community College and N.C. State University.  

     

    The deadlines for apply to each program are as follows:

     

    -Feb. 22 - AVID, Johnston County Career & Technical Leadership Academy, Johnston County Early College Academy, and the IB Diploma Programme.
    -April 18 - Fire Science Program, IDEAL Academy, and JoCo Teach.

     

    AVID at Smithfield-Selma High

    AVID, Advancement Via Individual Determination, is a college readiness program that utilizes proven practices in order to prepare students for success in high school, college, and a career. The application deadline is Feb. 22.

     

    Fire Science Program at Clayton High and Smithfield-Selma High

    Provides opportunity to students to earn certifications and a degree to be employable and promotable within the ranks of the Fire Service upon completion of the program. The application deadline is April 18.

     

    IDEAL Academy at South Johnston High

    A four-year opportunity for students to obtain skills and college credits in environmental sciences, agriculture and leadership. Four pathways are offered: Agricultural Career, Animal Science, Horticultural Science, and the University of Mount Olive associate degree. The application deadline is April 18.

     

    International Baccalaureate at Smithfield-Selma High

    An academically challenging and balanced programme of education with final examinations that prepare students for success at university and life beyond. Classes are designed to address the intellectual, social, emotional and physical well-being of students. The application deadline is Feb. 22.

     

    JoCo TEACH at Smithfield-Selma High

    The JoCo TEACH Academy is a four-year opportunity that identifies incoming freshman that are interested in becoming future teachers. The academy is a collaboration between Johnston County Public Schools, Johnston Community College, and N.C. State University. The students will begin a dual enrollment program that leads to an associate degree in teaching. Students will then continue through N.C. State College of Education’s teacher preparation program. The application deadline is April 18.

     

    Johnston County Career & Technical Leadership Academy at Johnston Community College

    A five-year Early College program where students complete high school requirements while earning an associate degree in one of five pathways: Medical Assistant, Nurse Aide, Information Technology (IT), Industrial Systems, and Early Childhood. The application deadline is Feb. 22.

     

    Johnston County Early College Academy at Johnston Community College

    A five-year program where students are dual enrolled in high school and college classes. Upon graduation, students will have obtained their high school diploma and a two-year associate degree for college transfer. The application deadline is Feb. 22.
