Making a difference in the lives of thousands of Johnston County students

SMITHFIELD, NC June 8, 2018 Leadership Johnston graduated eighteen professional leaders on June 6 at a dinner banquet sponsored by KS Bank, Inc.  Held at the Country Club of Johnston County, the event featured a special presentation from Brian Doyle, a former pilot of the US Airforce, now author and expert in generational leadership.

This year the Leadership Class completed a year-long Community Literacy Project to help schools in the county reach higher literacy standards for success.  After considering various challenges in the community, the class decided to target four schools identified as being in a “book desert’, where homes are less likely to have access to books.

The group set a goal of collecting 12,345 books so that every child in these schools could take home five books each.  Approximately 3,000 students, grades pre-K to 5th, were able to take advantage of the gift. With the help of community agencies, including Partnership for Children of Johnston County and the Johnston County Community Foundation, businesses, schools and citizens, the Leadership Johnston class exceeded the goal by 5000 books and raised over $3,000.

In addition to serving the elementary schools, over 1,500 faith-based books were donated to area church nurseries.

The Leadership Johnston Class of 2018 made a difference in the lives of thousands of children in Johnston County.
