RALEIGH - Smithfield-Selma High School’s Lamar Minter was recognized on Saturday, April 14th at the Triangle Town Center Barnes & Noble store (Raleigh, NC) as one of the winners in the “My Favorite Teacher” contest sponsored by Barnes & Noble. Minter was nominated by SSS Junior and AVID student Solieth Fabian, who first came to know Minter as a student in his homeroom class and also through his involvement with the AVID program. Fabian seized the opportunity this contest provided to let Minter and others know the difference he has made in her life, even as a homeroom teacher, proving Minter’s dedication to every single student he comes in contact with, not just those he teaches in class. Fabian attended Saturday’s recognition also to share the letter she wrote aloud. In her letter, she writes to Minter, “You inspire me to stay strong and reach for my dreams. You taught me that with hard work comes rewards and to let nothing stand in my way because everything is possible to accomplish.

The Triangle Town Center Barnes & Noble selected Fabian’s letter as the high school level winner for their store. Her letter will now go on to compete at the state level, where if it wins will result in a $5,000 cash prize for both Minter and the school.

Lamar Minter teaches in the SSS Microsoft IT Academy, which offers students the opportunity to earn Microsoft Office Specialist certification. In addition, he serves on the school’s AVID Site Team, advises the Men of Distinction club, and is also a member of the Johnston County Arts Council Board of Directors. He has been a tremendous asset to the SSS faculty. The faculty and staff are thankful to have teachers like him as well as students like Solieth Fabian as part of their team.
